Questions on Balance

What People Ask Before They Ever Book

Answered the way we would answer them standing at the beam, which sometimes means telling you a fitting is not what your bag needs yet.

What is swingweight, in plain terms?

It is a reading of how the weight of a club is distributed between the grip end and the head end, taken on a beam balanced fourteen inches from the butt. Two clubs can weigh the exact same amount on a kitchen scale and still feel completely different in your hands if that distribution is not the same. Swingweight is the number that describes the distribution, not the total.

I am a fifteen handicap. Does any of this actually apply to me?

More than it applies to a scratch player, honestly. A low handicapper is usually already playing clubs close to their correct spec, so a fitting buys small refinements. A mid handicap bag is far more likely to be carrying a real mismatch somewhere, and mismatches show up as inconsistency before they show up as lost distance. The gain is usually fewer bad misses, which is harder to feel on a range mat than it is to see on a scorecard.

What should I actually bring to a session?

The clubs you currently play, including the ones you have stopped trusting. The shoes and glove you wear on the course, since posture shifts with both. If you keep score digitally, a screenshot of your last several rounds helps, though it is not required the way the clubs are.

Am I required to buy clubs after the session?

No. A meaningful share of our sessions end with the client leaving with nothing more than a printed spec sheet and no order placed. That sheet lists head, shaft, length, lie, loft, swingweight target and grip, and it belongs to you whether you build through us or take it somewhere else. We would rather build the clubs, but the fitting fee covers the reading, not a purchase.

Can you rebalance clubs I already own instead of selling me new ones?

Frequently, and we suggest it more than a shop that only sells new sets would. A shaft swap or a lie and loft correction on a decent set of irons costs a fraction of a full replacement and often produces a bigger change, because the original problem was in the spec, not the head. Length trims, tip weights and grip changes to shift swingweight are all done on the bench here.

How long does a build actually take?

Eight to ten days is typical, counted from the day components arrive rather than the day you book. Anything we already stock on the wall moves faster, sometimes three or four days. A custom-ordered head or shaft runs on the manufacturer's schedule, and we pass along their real estimate instead of guessing one.

Why is the studio closed on Mondays?

Monday is reserved entirely for calibration and build work with nobody waiting in a bay. The reference weight gets checked, the beam gets re-zeroed, and the week's pending builds get finished without interruption. It is a large part of why the turnaround times here hold steady.

Do you fit left-handed golfers?

Yes, the demo wall carries left-handed heads across every category we fit. Shaft options are identical either way, since a shaft does not care which side of the ball you stand on. Mention it when booking so the right heads are pulled and staged before you arrive.

How often should a set actually get rechecked?

Once a year for anyone playing regularly is a fair baseline, since heads move slightly and lofts and lies drift with use. Grips tend to need attention closer to every thirty-five or forty rounds in this climate, sooner for anyone playing through a full Louisiana summer without wiping down between shots. We check swingweight on any club you bring in, no charge, whether or not you booked a session.

Is an indoor bay good enough for a proper wedge fitting?

Not entirely, and we will not pretend it is. Bounce and grind exist specifically to manage how a club interacts with turf, and a mat cannot reproduce that interaction honestly. Wedge sessions here include time on real grass next door. When weather rules that out, we offer to reschedule the turf portion rather than sign off on a fitting done entirely off a mat.

Can my son or daughter share a session with me?

Two players can split a longer block if you are both after single-club work, and it is a common request from parents fitting a junior alongside their own bag. A full bag session for two people needs two separate appointments, since the weigh-in and measurement work alone fills the allotted time on its own.

Does swingweight matter for a putter the same way it does for a driver?

Not quite the same way. Putters are usually described by total head weight and toe hang rather than a swingweight letter, since the stroke is a different motion entirely from a full swing. We still weigh the putter on the beam during a putter fitting, but we read it differently than we would a seven iron, and the sheet reflects that distinction.

One More Thing Worth Saying Plainly

A club that is described as “fit” on a receipt does not mean much by itself. Ask what was actually measured, ask what changed from stock, and ask to see the numbers in writing before you pay for anything. A session that produces no spec sheet at the end was a sales conversation, not a fitting, whatever it was called on the invoice.

And no beam reading corrects a swing fault. If your contact point moves around from shot to shot, the honest answer is to work on that first and come back for the fitting after, and we will tell you that in person rather than take the fee anyway. We can point you toward instructors around Baton Rouge we trust.
